Paediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals (PEPP)

Course Description

Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the PEPP course represents a comprehensive source of prehospital medical information for the emergent care of infants and children. It will teach prehospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children. This exciting programme is the first of its kind designed specifically for pre-hospital practitioners. PEPP is a comprehensive, innovative, and highly visual paediatric course delivered via case-based lectures, live action videos, hands-on skill stations and small group scenario teaching.



The PEPP lectures cover the most important points that need to be emphasised through the use of case studies. The video sections contain real-life footage from the field, emergency departments, and operating theatres, to show students step-by-step procedures for assessing and treating paediatric patients. Skill stations give students an opportunity to handle the equipment, to size the equipments, and to perform skills under direct supervision. The scenarios allow students to apply information from all aspects of the course and to put knowledge and skills into practice.

The course has both a BLS version and an ALS version.  The two versions of the course can be delivered seperately or in combination with differing skill stations for BLS and ALS candidates. ALS and BLS candidates work together during scenarios, with each practicing to their own skill level, as is the case in real situations.

Prior to the face-to-face course, students receive the latest edition of the course manual, which is essential pre-course reading.

The faculty includes doctors, paramedics, nurses and advanced medics, who all have extensive pre-hospital experience. All of the faculty have completed the PEPP course themselves and many also hold advanced level paediatric instructor qualifications, e.g. APLS/EPLS.

Certification​

The course manual is provided for essential pre-course reading.  Course assessment includes a practical scenario assessment and a 30 minute written MCQ paper. On successful completion of the course assessments, candidates receive the PEPP certificate valid for three years. The course is accredited for CPD/CME  by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
