Battlefield Advanced Trauma Life Support - BATLS 2008TM

COURSE DESCRIPTION

BATLS 2008™ is a multi-disciplinary course, but teaches and assesses to each disciplines’ level of competence. Doctors will be taught and assessed on every skill as an individual skill. Nurses and medics undertake some skills as individual skills (provider) and some as team skills (assistant).

The principal objective of BATLS is to confirm practical competence and understanding in a broad range of skills, coupled with judgement in a team-based scenario.

Individual summative assessment is by means of a 10 station Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE). Half of the OSPE stands are supervised by instructors and half involve a time-pressured interpretation of data (for example a clinical photograph, scenario, piece of equipment, bedside laboratory results or radiographs). Assessment is tailored to each level of competence. Eight of the OSPE stands must be successfully completed to pass the course: this must include all three of the “core skills” stands.

BATLS is concentrated on readiness to meet immediate operational needs.  The delivery of trauma care in the field will be optimized by identifying individuals who deliver trauma care as part of their peacetime role, and who are trained on BATLS as contextual training prior to deployment.  BATLS is directed at the management of the individual casualty by the professional care provider.

Our instructors have first hand experience of instructing the BATLS course for the British Military at their Catterick Garrison.
